Suzan Meldonian

Ever since Sea Hunt, I was hooked. I’ve been an underwater photographer since the 70’s. I am fascinated by the  bizarre and unusual looking creatures, and have this strange affinity for jellyfish and dangerous sea life. Seahorsies too. No two look alike, and I love capturing their personalities. Behavioral moments are the most exciting, and the more color the better. I still love wide angle but am not set up for it digitally as yet.

Since converting to a Nikon D200, in 2008, I find my imagery has improved ten fold in the last year. It is so nice getting that instant gratification, seeing if you got the shot, and knowing when to bracket a few more, or fix your lighting. Not being limited to only 36 shots allows you to take so much more risk, and allows the creativity in composition to blossom.  There simply is no comparison to the freedom digital affords a wildlife photographer.

Becoming a member of SFUPS was one of the best things I could have done. The monthly competitions really help ySuzan Meldonianou “raise the bar.”  By seeing what images are the favorites, helps you to “focus” better.  When you surround yourself with excellence, you too will excel. We are a unique breed and the camaraderie of diving with other photographers makes it so much more rewarding.

Suzan Meldonian has been published in a number of publications. She is presently the SFUPS Newsletter Editor. Suzan was awarded the Photographer of the Year in 2007.
